Google Analytics - What metrics should we measure for success?

What is Success anyway?

There are so many measurable metrics on Google Analytics that at first it's quite easy to feel bewildered and somewhat unsure of this all knowing machine.

A sea of data, waves of graphs, diagrams and reports that give insight into website's performace, but what are the metrics for Success?

Success can mean so many different things to so many different people, but ultimately it can mean whatever you want it to.

Maybe a bit simple but this is how I see it, choose the right goals that mean success to you.

Here's a great TED TALK, about success and goal setting, and something that was new for me, OKRs. Objective and Key Results.
"Our leaders and institutions are failing us, but it's not always because they're bad or unethical, says venture capitalist John Doerr -- often, it's simply because they're leading us toward the wrong objectives. In this practical talk, Doerr shows us how we can get back on track with "Objectives and Key Results," or OKRs -- a goal-setting system that's been employed by the likes of Google, Intel and Bono to set and execute on audacious goals. Learn more about how setting the right goals can mean the difference between success and failure -- and how we can use OKRs to hold our leaders and ourselves accountable." [1]

SMART Goals.

Following these steps to plan your goals and how you will achieve them, will lead to "success" however you choose to define it. Goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely are more likely to succeed than making random goals and falling of them because they are vague or unattainable to begin with,

-Example 'The Remarketable Blog'.

I will be updating this post in the coming weeks with screenshots of my goals and their progress(hopefuly) on Google analytics, but for now let's leave it there and let me ask you a quick question.

What does success mean to you? And how do you measure your own success? Please let me know in the comments below!

If you made it to the end thanks for reading, please reward yourself with a quick meditation to help reduce anxiety, clear the head and rest your eyes. I hope it helps you like it helps me!

Have a great day!

  1. I agree, Google Analytics is a bit of a mine field when you first dive into it! Takes a bit of getting used to and finding out what's useful to you!
I liked the mindfulness video at the end, nice touch :)

  2. I hope that you are also doing well at this weird/soon to become normal/weird again time.

I really enjoyed your post. The Ted talk is v. powerful and definitely made me sit back and reflect. Scary to think that management can wilfully lead people in the totally wrong direction. I guess that's why taking holidays are so important!

I think my definition of what success means is quite different to what it was at age 17 (shock horror). Recent events in particular have reinforced what is truly of value to me and a lot of that is quite simple, uncomplicated stuff such as family and health (arguably that could be considered complicated stuff however!). Not sure how you go about measuring success in those areas - maybe that's something to pitch to Google Analytics!

Looking forward to the next post.

    1. Hey Ciara, thanks for reading. Success for me at 17 was getting served cans from Spar so safe to say it means someting quite different now!
Maybe it is something you can pitch to GA in the future. I'm not sure either how you would go about measuring success in those areas. Like for Family, how do measure Loyalty or Love? Tricky indeed. Thanks for the food for thought!
